The projects of İzgi Uygur (master student, PEM515E Place Theory and Design class), İzel Beşikçi, Doruk Büyükyıldırım, Tuğçe Duman, Melike Karaali, Ruken Karakuş, Can Kuşadalı, Melike Üresin, Duygu Sinirlioğlu (undergraduate students, PEM212E Landscape Design I design studio), who has participated in Lille/Design of Change International Project Competition as a part of the interdisciplinary project work “Design for Change/ ITU: Urban Agriculture Istanbul” is published in Lille/Design For Change, Design Competition, Students’ Projects, Edition 2012-2013, Lille, France. Design for Change ITU: Urban Agriculture Istanbul is an interdisciplinary project work of XL Design Lab ITU with integration and collaboration of professionals in practice and faculty and students from Interdisciplinary Urban Design Graduate program, Landscape Architecture graduate and undergraduate programs at Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture, realized in 2012-2013 Spring term. The interactive map of the project, designed by Sena Izgi (ITU PEM graduate), will be available in the following months both at the Lille/Design For Change and XL Design Lab ITU web sites.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT A/V PROJECT EXHIBITION

SUBJECT & AIM

We are challenging you to develop ideas and strategies that support regenerative and productive urban landscapes to support healthy living.

USE ISTANBUL AS A LIVING LAB for DESIGN INVESTIGATIONS and SOURCE of IDEAS

Investigating the depths of our urban memory, discovering the local potentials and considering the future needs of our ever-increasing population/ever-sprawling metropolitan areas and creating visionary ideas that can be applied to the present and future urban contexts will be evaluated.

Special emphasis is on using and utilising the four elements (earth-water-air-fire) of nature/science of places:

-to revitalise wasted, neglected or lost urban open spaces

-to create productive urban landscapes

-to provide human-nature continuum within the city center

-to support urban ecological systems with energy, food, social networks

-to support public education, economy and health

SITES for design investigations and source of ideas

can be selected among the nieghborhoods along Bosphorus, Golden Horn or within the Historical Peninsula

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Undergraduate and graduate students can participate individually or within a project team. Project teams can be formed including both graduate and undergraduate students from different departments and graduate programs at the ITU Faculty of Architecture.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FIRST PHASE

-diagrams&interactive maps for explaining design strategy for the selected site(s) and its surrounding environment

-choice and use of scale, visual materials (including videos), colors, texts and modeling (rendering), animation is free for the presentation technique.

All materials should be minimum 200dpi in TIFF format.

All submissions will be online accompanied by printed poster(s)*

ONLINE SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 02.MARCH.2013

*max. two A0 size will be submitted in printed format.

XL-DesignLab ITU© is a next generation design research laboratory at Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture. The design research activities focus on the application of interdisciplinary concepts and methods to create physical and digital design interfaces and interactive contexts/environments for experimental -aimed, but not limited to- architecture, landscape and urban design processes and applications in varying scales.

The research and the experimental design studies are conducted through Experimental Studies on Place and Design, Interdisciplinary Design Research, Place Theory and Design courses and the design studios at Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture. The design research laboratory is already collaborating with and open for new international research and project collaborations, and design events.

The XL-DesignLab ITU is providing an open innovative interdisciplinary platform and an experimental medium with the participation of researchers, graduate and undergraduate design students who are integrating the possibilities of new media with real time field studies while aiming to discover and develop new living place experiences, design strategies and experimental design applications.

The selected works of ongoing research and experimental design studies will take place here.
